Domestic: a study in male aggression and history of subjugation, embroidery thread on canvas, embroidery hoop, 2017
This series is a study of the violence that ensues in domestic spaces and the deep rooted history of gender and domination that exists not only in the household but also in the art world. Below is my artist statement.
A hierarchy is defined as a system or organization in which people or groups are ranked one above the other according to status or authority. It is within the classification of gender that such a chain of command has long been established. This categorization can also be experienced in the art world with high and low art. High art has historically been male territory and low art, traditionally craft art, is what women have been conditioned to believe is theirs. Arts like embroidery became something to occupy time for those who needn’t worry about anything beyond the household.
The same binary is what urges men to assert dominance over women and results in incidences of domestic violence. Domestic illustrates victims of domestic violence utilizing a traditionally domestic medium. The same medium that typically depicts flowers and single-line pleasantries is used to depict the sometimes harsh reality of domestic situations.
The gaze of the women confronts the viewer while undermining the placement of women and crafts in the subjugate position. Women have been the subject and object of the gaze in the majority of art history, but in Domestic she meets the viewer’s eye to demonstrate the consequences of her existence in society as an object and lesser.
